"Looking Back" at Sandbanks - Poole, Dorset - Iris Morris
This is the fourth book in The 'Looking Back' series following 'Ashley Cross' 'Lilliput' and 'Canford Cliffs'
Once a wild and desolate place with high sand dunes, gorse and windswept pines, the Sandbanks peninsula forms the entrance to Poole Harbour. Smugglers, wildfowlers and Coastguard Officers gradually gave way to boat builders, ferrymen, ramshackle beach huts and the occasional dwelling before luxurious residences and apartment blocks changed the skyline. The sandy beaches remain but the feeling of freedom and sensation of space amid the sand dunes has gone forever.

This fascinating collection of over 200 photographs of Poole complements an earlier volume of photographs in this series compiled by the same authors. This completely new collection of images takes the reader once again on a nostalgic journey through Poole to look at things as they were, not so very long ago. This book contains scenes from all aspects of life in Poole over the years. Once familiar buildings, shops and firms can be seen again and Poole people are seen involved in all manner of work and play activities. There is an interesting feature about Poole Town Football Club and another about Poole lifeboats. Schools, hospitals, pubs, churches and carnivals all make an appearance. During the great age of steam, most railways in Dorset were operated by the Southern Railway and the Great Western Railway. These Dorset railway companies and daily life on the branch lines during this era and beyond are recorded in this text amid many captioned photographs. Bygone railway stations are affectionately recalled, together with open cattle trucks and luxurious Pullman coaches that served our great-grandfathers' generation.
Victorian Poole - John Hillier / Hardcover / Published November 1990
Golden Years of Poole is a collection of photographs from a time not- so-long-ago. It is not a history book, rather a nostalgic look at life concentrating on that most eventful period in our recent past centred around the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Each picture is brought to life with generous, well researched captions that will rekindle thoughts of how things were in the Poole of our childhood, the Poole of our parents, and perhaps even our grandparents. Inside this book you will find images of everyday life, including people at work, at play, on the move and in the town centre. Every facet of Poole nostalgia finds a place. Above all these images are intended to bring back memories of how things were in a time that seems like only yesterday...
