Saturday 19 November 2016 - The Girl and the Giraffe

Sherling Studio - Lighthouse, Poole

11am & 2pm

The Girl and the Giraffe, an uplifting show about friendship and wellbeing comes to Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts to entertain young people aged 3-6 and their families.

One day whilst Girl is playing in her garden, she spots something peculiar on the other side of the fence. Climbing up as high as she can to get a better view, she is surprised when she comes face to face with... Giraffe!

As their friendship grows, Girl discovers that Giraffe isn't very well. She tries everything she can to make him feel a bit better; putting on bandages, making a cup of tea, and even baking a truly magnificent cake, but she doesn't get it quite right. Girl soon realises that Giraffe doesn't need a plaster for a graze on his arm or a scratch on his knee. Giraffe is sad. Sometimes we need a different kind of plaster for the things you can't always see.

Charming puppetry, an enchanting soundscape and beautiful storytelling combine in this sensitive show about wellbeing and friendship, told from a child's perspective.
The Girl and the Giraffe was created in collaboration with director Titania Krimpas, designer Amy Yardley and composer Greg Hall. The story is told by two performers, Amber-Rose May and Laurence Alliston-Greiner, who are also the co-artistic directors of Floods of Ink.

“The Girl and The Giraffe is a story about making friends and learning to understand that sometimes people can be poorly in ways that aren't always obvious, and it can be the little things in life that can make a big difference,” commented Amber-Rose May, who plays the Girl in The Girl and the Giraffe.

“We listened and shared personal stories with friends and family, and began talking to people whose lives had been affected by mental illness. We realised that these things can be really daunting for adults to talk to children about, so we decided to create a show that, starts to explore these issues in a sensitive and age-appropriate way,” she said.

“Mental health can be a difficult topic to address, and we would like audiences to know that sometimes we need a different kind of plaster for things we don't see. By talking to a friend, giving somebody a hug or sharing a smile, we can change lives for the better,” added Amber-Rose May.

The Girl and the Giraffe is one of several productions that form part of Half Moon Presents, the producing arm of Half Moon, supporting the promotion and development of theatre for young audiences at a national and international level.

Chris Elwell, Director of Half Moon commented: “We're delighted to be working with Floods of Ink on The Girl and the Giraffe, an important production about friendship and wellbeing. We look forward to bringing this touching new production to venues across the UK and telling this sensitive story from a child’s perspective.”

Bournemouth and Poole College, Community Links Room, North Road, Poole

A free course in Poole will help local people who have lost their sight to regain their confidence and independence.

The 'Finding your Feet' course, run by charity Action for Blind People, is taking place at The Bournemouth and Poole College, Community Links Room, North Road, Poole, Dorset, from 10.30am to 3pm on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 March 2016. The two-day course will provide information, advice and practical skills for anyone who has sight loss as well as their family and friends.

The sessions will provide people with sight loss advice on a range of essential everyday skills such as how to get around outside, use public transport, cook healthy meals, shop and bank online and even how to make a cup of tea safely.

Lizzie Abnett, from Action for Blind People, said: "It can be frightening and overwhelming for someone newly diagnosed with sight loss but practical and emotional support is available.

"Being blind or partially sighted does not have to mean losing your confidence or independence. We hope anyone living in Bournemouth or Poole with or affected by sight loss will sign-up to the 'Finding your Feet' course, come and share their experiences with others, and benefit from the wide range of information and advice on offer."

For further information and to register for the course, call 01722 345440 or email salisbury@actionforblindpeople.org.uk.
