The Local History Centre has been created in the historic town cellars at the rear of the Poole Museum, with the support of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant.
The impressive facility combines the local history resources of both the Poole Library Service and Poole Museum Service within this one building. Visitors are welcome to call in to research any aspect of Poole's rich and varied history, including from the following :
People - especially family history.
Places - including archaeology and architecture.
Maritime - relating to Poole as a port.
Trade & Industry - of the Borough of Poole including links to Newfoundland.
Transport - by land, sear and air.
Resources available to the researcher include:
Books and pamplets - one of the major collections of printed local history material in Dorset.
Newspapers - over 150 years of local titles such as the Poole and Dorset Herald.
Family History resources - many invaluable sources including copies of census returns, poll books, parish regsiters and street directories.
Maritime History resources - indexes of Poole ships and port arrivals and departures. Records of historic trade links with Newfoundland and other overseas lands.
Maps and charts - there is a wide coverage of historic maps from the 16th Century. Large scale plans include the 1888 Ordnanace Survey.
Photographs - thousands of historic and recent images taken throughout the Borough.
