Beach Wheelchairs at SandbanksGeneral

Poole in general is a welcoming place, for those of you who are less mobile, you will find there are plenty of facilities which you are most welcome at. Getting around shouldn't be too much of a problem. The High Street is a pedestrianised area, with drop kerbs, designed with visually impaired people in mind too. The buses around Poole feature low steps, indeed a new range has just been launched, which claim to have the lowest entrance height of any bus in the UK, as well as specially designed wheelchair areas. Poole Quay with all it's attractions is easily reached from the High Street, being a flat level walk. With the latest introduction of "go-anywhere" wheelchairs at Sandbanks Beach, Poole is now able to share its beaches and water with all those brave enough to take the plunge !

As mentioned above, the High Street is all on the level with no hills or steps to negotiate. The only possible problem is a rail crossing, which will entail waiting if a train is coming. The main shopping centre is The Dolphin Centre. Here you will find lifts available to the First Floor and ramps where there are several steps to climb. Poole runs a Shopmobility Scheme (A registered charity), which provides registered members with scooters, wheelchairs (Electric + Self-Propelled) to enable you to get out and about in Poole. The Shopmobility Office can be found on the ground floor of the Kingland Road Car Park to the rear of The Dolphin Shopping Centre. For further information about this service call 01202 661770, or visit their website at

Car Parking

There are numerous Car Parks within Poole, all of which have specially designated spaces. The biggest one is the main Kingland Road Car Park to the rear of The Dolphin Shopping Centre with up to 23 spaces reserved. This is also the nearest Car Park to the Shopmobility Office. Other Car Parks do not have so many spaces available but all have some reserved for disabled drivers. If you are looking at parking at one of the beaches, again there are reserved spaces for you. All beach car parks are surface car parks. The car park at Sandbanks is the best, as the Sandbanks Beach features the best disabled facilities on the beachfront.

The Town Centre is well served by both Train and Bus as well as there being many taxis available. The Train Station is a level walk from The Dolphin Shopping Centre, partially under cover. The Train Station itself is user friendly with flat platforms and easy access. The Buses as mentioned above, are suitable for wheelchair users and the Bus Station is part of The Dolphin Shopping Centre so access is easy. Taxis are available with special facilities for wheelchair users, the two companies are Dial-A-Cab Tel 01202 666822 and T.Gibbens Tel 01202 673889.

All of the toilets designated for use by the disabled are operated by the RADAR key system. The RADAR keys can be purchased or hired from the Tourist Information Centre on Poole Quay, The Dolphin Shopping Centre Management Office or The Civic Centre (By the entrance to Poole Park). Toilets are available in The Dolphin Shopping Centre, the Bus Station, Old Orchard Car Park, Chapel Lane, Baiter Recreation Ground and Poole Park. If you are visiting the beach facilities are available at Shore Road Beach, Sandbanks Pavillion, the Haven Ferry, Branksome Chine Car Park and Branksome Dene Chine Car Park
